Invent\u00e9 en 1968 par le Dr Kenneth H. Cooper, m\u00e9decin militaire am\u00e9ricain, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7u pour \u00e9valuer la condition physique des soldats. Rapidement, il s\u2019est impos\u00e9 comme un outil universel, utilis\u00e9 dans les \u00e9coles, les clubs sportifs et les forces arm\u00e9es du monde entier. Son principe est d\u2019une simplicit\u00e9 remarquable : courir le plus loin possible en 12 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus de cinquante ans apr\u00e8s sa cr\u00e9ation, le test de Cooper reste une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence. Mais est-il toujours adapt\u00e9 aux coureurs modernes ? Comment le r\u00e9aliser dans de bonnes conditions ? Et surtout, que signifient r\u00e9ellement ses r\u00e9sultats ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Qu\u2019est-ce que le test de Cooper ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le test de Cooper est un <strong>test d\u2019effort maximal<\/strong>. Il vise \u00e0 mesurer la capacit\u00e9 d\u2019un individu \u00e0 maintenir une <a href=\"\/blog\/allure-et-vitesse-la-difference-2324.html\"target=\"_top\" title=\"Allure ou vitesse\" >allure<\/a> soutenue sur une dur\u00e9e d\u00e9termin\u00e9e, ici 12 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 la diff\u00e9rence du test VAMEVAL, qui augmente progressivement l\u2019intensit\u00e9, le Cooper impose un effort constant : il s\u2019agit de donner le maximum pendant toute la dur\u00e9e. Cela le rend particuli\u00e8rement exigeant physiquement et mentalement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat principal du test est de fournir une estimation indirecte de la <strong>VO2max<\/strong>, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire la consommation maximale d\u2019oxyg\u00e8ne. Beaucoup partent trop vite et s\u2019\u00e9croulent en fin de test.<\/li><li><strong>Mesure<\/strong> : \u00e0 l\u2019arr\u00eat du chrono, on note la distance totale parcourue.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Sur tapis de course, le test est possible, mais il n\u00e9cessite une machine capable de mesurer avec pr\u00e9cision la distance et de maintenir un effort constant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Comment interpr\u00e9ter les r\u00e9sultats ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 la fin du test, la distance parcourue en 12 minutes est convertie en estimation de la VO2max gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la formule de Cooper :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VO2max = (distance en m\u00e8tres \u2013 504,9) \u00f7 44,73<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Par exemple :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Distance = 3000 m \u2192 VO2max \u2248 55,9 ml\/kg\/min.<\/li><li>Distance = 2500 m \u2192 VO2max \u2248 44,7 ml\/kg\/min.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Il existe \u00e9galement des <strong>bar\u00e8mes par \u00e2ge et sexe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Un homme de 30 ans parcourant plus de 2800 m est class\u00e9 \u201cexcellent\u201d.<\/li><li>Une femme du m\u00eame \u00e2ge qui d\u00e9passe 2500 m est \u00e9galement \u201cexcellente\u201d.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Les avantages du test de Cooper<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le succ\u00e8s du Cooper s\u2019explique par plusieurs facteurs :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Simplicit\u00e9<\/strong> : aucun mat\u00e9riel sophistiqu\u00e9 requis.<\/li><li><strong>Accessibilit\u00e9<\/strong> : tout le monde peut le r\u00e9aliser, du scolaire au sportif confirm\u00e9.<\/li><li><strong>Rapidit\u00e9<\/strong> : en 12 minutes, on obtient un indicateur fiable de la condition physique.<\/li><li><strong>R\u00e9f\u00e9rence universelle<\/strong> : il permet de comparer facilement les r\u00e9sultats entre individus.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Les limites du Cooper<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le principal d\u00e9faut du test de Cooper est sa <strong>duret\u00e9<\/strong>. Maintenir un effort maximal sur 12 minutes est \u00e9prouvant, surtout pour les d\u00e9butants. Les risques de blessure ou de d\u00e9couragement sont r\u00e9els si le test est mal encadr\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Par ailleurs, le Cooper peut \u00eatre biais\u00e9 par une mauvaise gestion de l\u2019allure : partir trop vite m\u00e8ne souvent \u00e0 une contre-performance. Enfin, comme tout test de terrain, il reste une <strong>estimation<\/strong> et ne remplace pas un test VO2max en laboratoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Quand et pourquoi r\u00e9aliser ce test ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Le Cooper est particuli\u00e8rement utile en d\u00e9but de saison ou lors d\u2019une reprise, pour \u00e9valuer son niveau de d\u00e9part. Il peut aussi servir de test comparatif \u00e0 intervalles r\u00e9guliers (par exemple tous les 3 \u00e0 4 mois) afin de mesurer ses progr\u00e8s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En revanche, il n\u2019est pas recommand\u00e9 de le r\u00e9p\u00e9ter trop souvent.
